Health Literacy


This badge introduces students to the concept of health literacy and the importance of clear communication to inform the public about health.


It is meant to convey that students understand:

  • how health literacy influences health status and outcomes
  • how to write about health in plain language
  • how to evaluate health materials using the Maryland Plain Language checklist
  • their responsibilities as health professionals to improve health literacy

Earning Criteria:

To earn the health literacy badge, students must have a minimum of 10 hours of health literacy experience before graduation. There are two types of activities - required and elective. There are 8 hours of required activities and 2 hours of elective activities. The learning activities include listening to recorded webinars and podcasts, reading journal articles, and drafting an educational material using plain language criteria. Students also can attend conferences, convenings or join a medical visit with an interprofessional team of providers and students at the University of Maryland Baltimore.
